PS5: New feature makes games even prettier

The PS5 got a new feature. With VRR, your games will look even smoother – if you have the right TV. San Mateo, California – It’s been almost a year and a half since the release of the PS5. However, Sony is still in the process of really exploiting the full potential of the console – both in terms of games and the performance of the current PlayStation. For a long time, fans were looking at the VRR feature of the Xbox Series X, which was previously missing on the PS5. That changed spontaneously. Sony brought VRR to its console at short notice this week and To be able to use it, all you have to do is make sure you have a compatible TV in the living room.
  • Console name: PlayStation 5 (PS5)
  • Manufacturer: Sony Entertainment
  • Type: Stationary game console
  • generation: 09th console generation
  • storage medium: Blu Ray, SSD
  • release: November 19, 2020

PS5: Update for VRR is already available – just download it

How do I get the update? On April 25, Sony announced the release of VRR for the PS5. At the time, there was talk that the feature would be released with an update ” in the next few days “. Since then, the company from San Mateo has quietly and secretly activated the update. So to download it, all you have to do is turn on your PS5 and be connected to the internet; the rest happens automatically. With the right settings, the update will also download while the PS5 saves power. How do I enable VRR? If your PS5 is connected to a TV with HDMI 2.1 and VRR support, the feature will be automatically activated after the update. Under Screen and Video in the console settings, you can turn VRR on and off and, if necessary, activate it for games that don’t actually support the feature yet. However, Sony warns of unexpected visual effects. If you experience these, you should turn off VRR again for unsupported games.

PS5: First games with VRR support already confirmed by Sony

What exactly is VRR? VRR stands for “variable refresh rate” and refers to a system in which the PS5 synchronizes the frame rate of a game with that of the television. For example, if you have a TV with a 100 Hertz frame rate, but a game only runs at 60 or 120 frames per second, the PS5 can compensate for this difference with VRR and display the picture even smoother. The console avoids ugly “tearing” or problems with “frame pacing”. However, as mentioned, it is necessary that your television is equipped with HDMI 2.1 and supports VRR. Otherwise, you cannot use the feature.

Which games support the feature? In the PlayStation Blog post, Sony directly shared a list of games that will support VRR at launch. This list isn’t too long yet, but more titles are set to follow in the coming weeks and months. For now, these are the games you can play on PS5 with VRR:
  • Astro’s Playroom
  • Call of Duty Vanguard
  • Call of Duty Black Ops Cold War
  • deathloop
  • destiny 2
  • Devil May Cry 5 Special Edition
  • dirt 5
  • god fall
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man Remastered
  • Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales
  • Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart
  • Resident Evil Village
  • Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands
  • Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six Siege
  • Tribes of Midgard
The fact that Tribes of Midgard can already be found in the list is a bit suspicious. After all, the game wasn’t exactly a huge hit, but it most recently appeared in a leak to the PS Plus games in May 2022. Perhaps the fact that Tribes of Midgard is now one of the first games to support PS5 VRR is an indication of the authenticity of the leak.
